stairlift rental costs explained

When people ask about stairlift rental costs, the headline price is usually the first thing they want to know. But the monthly fee is only part of the picture. What is actually included in that payment, and what would you be paying separately if you bought instead, is often what makes the real difference to your decision.

This article explains exactly what your monthly stairlift rental fee covers, what is included in the upfront installation cost, and why the total cost of renting is often more straightforward than it first appears.

For the headline rental prices themselves, you can rent a straight stairlift from ยฃ450 installation plus ยฃ50 per month, curved stairlifts from ยฃ2,000 installation plus ยฃ100 per month. What Does It Cost to Rent a Stairlift?

The rental cost depends on whether you have a straight staircase or a curved one, because the two are quite different in terms of what’s involved.

Straight stairlift rental

For a straight staircase, rental from 1st Choice Stairlifts starts from a one-off installation fee of ยฃ450. That fee covers the fitting of the stairlift, your first month’s rental, and the removal of the lift when you no longer need it. After that first month, the ongoing rental is ยฃ50 per month.

In simple terms: ยฃ450 to get started, then ยฃ50 a month for as long as you need it.

Curved stairlift rental

Curved staircases are a different matter because the rail has to be made to measure for your specific staircase. Unlike a straight stairlift rail, a curved rail can’t simply be moved from one home to another, so a rail made for your home is required before installation can take place.

For a curved stairlift rental, the installation fee starts from ยฃ2,000. This covers the survey, the rail made for your home, the fitting, your first month’s rental, and the removal at the end. The ongoing monthly cost is ยฃ100 per month.

What’s included in the monthly rental?

This is where renting starts to look particularly good value. Your monthly rental payment covers servicing and maintenance throughout the time the stairlift is in your home. If something goes wrong, you call us and we sort it out. No unexpected repair bills on top of your monthly payment.

The maintenance cover applies to manufacturing defects and normal wear and tear, rather than damage caused by misuse. For the vast majority of customers, that distinction never comes up. The stairlift just works, and if it ever doesn’t, we’re there.

Who Are Rental Stairlifts Right For?

Over the years we’ve installed rental stairlifts for all sorts of reasons, and the people who choose to rent rather than buy often have very different circumstances. Here are the situations we see most often.

People who need a stairlift quickly because of a serious illness

Sometimes a family gets in touch because a loved one has been diagnosed with a terminal illness and they need something in place quickly. It’s an incredibly difficult time, and the practicalities of getting around the home safely become urgent. In those circumstances, because the need is short term, most people opt to rent rather than buy. We can often have a straight stairlift installed within days of first contact, and knowing the lift can be removed without any fuss when the time comes means one less thing for the family to deal with.

These are calls we handle with great care, and we do everything we can to move as quickly as possible. If you’re in this situation, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Recovery from an operation or a fall

A hip replacement, a knee operation, a bad fall, a period of illness. Sometimes the stairs become a problem for a few weeks or months, and then as recovery progresses, they stop being a problem again.

Rental is perfect for this. You get the stairlift when you need it, and when you’re back on your feet and no longer need it, we come and take it away. No long-term commitment required.

A visiting family member who needs a little extra help

Sometimes people get in touch because a relative is coming to stay, perhaps over Christmas or for a longer visit, and they can’t manage the stairs. Rather than have them sleeping downstairs or struggling, a short-term rental straight stairlift is a straightforward solution. It goes in before the visit, and comes out again afterwards. Simple as that.

Families with reluctant parents

This one comes up more than you might think. An older parent is struggling with the stairs but flat refuses to have a stairlift fitted because it feels permanent. A rental can be the easier conversation to have. “Let’s just try it for a few months and see how you get on.”

The honest truth? Once a stairlift is in, people rarely want it taken out. Not because they feel stuck with it, but because they quickly realise how much difference it makes to their day. Once you start using it, you won’t want to be without it.

People who don’t want a large upfront payment

Buying a straight stairlift outright typically costs from around ยฃ2,000 upwards. For some people, that’s a significant sum to find in one go. Rental spreads the cost into a predictable monthly outgoing that’s much easier to budget for.

There’s also real peace of mind in knowing your monthly payment covers everything. No surprise bills, no separate servicing costs to factor in. It’s all in one amount.

People in later life who prefer flexibility

Often people in later life feel uncertain about making a long-term purchase. They’re not sure how long they’ll need the stairlift, or they simply prefer not to commit to buying. Rental suits them well because there’s no long-term obligation, and the removal at the end is part of the deal.

The idea of renting isn’t unfamiliar to this generation either. Many people rented their television for years. A rolling monthly rental is something they understand and are comfortable with.

How Long Do People Typically Rent a Stairlift For?

The honest answer is: it varies enormously. We’ve had rental stairlifts in place for just a matter of days in urgent situations. We’ve had others in for months during a recovery period. And we’ve had rental stairlifts in customers’ homes for eight, nine, ten years.

There’s no typical rental period. The stairlift stays for as long as you need it, and when you no longer need it, you give us a call.

Renting vs Buying: Which Works Out Better?

This is a fair question and it deserves a straight answer.

For short to medium-term use, renting almost always makes more financial sense. If you need a stairlift for a year or two, you’ll pay considerably less through rental than buying outright, with the added benefit that maintenance is included and there are no removal costs to think about.

For longer-term use, the maths shifts. If you rent a straight stairlift at ยฃ50 a month for five years, that’s ยฃ3,000 in monthly payments on top of your initial ยฃ450 installation fee. A purchased stairlift might have cost less overall over that same period.

That said, financial cost isn’t the only thing to weigh up. The flexibility of rental, the included servicing, the certainty of a fixed monthly cost, and the ease of removal at the end all have real value, particularly for people who don’t want the responsibility of owning the equipment.

If you’re not sure which makes more sense for your situation, the best thing to do is have a conversation with us. We’ll help you work out what makes sense for you, not push you towards one option or the other.

What Type of Stairlifts Are Available to Rent?

We offer rental stairlifts for both straight and curved indoor staircases. Our rental stairlifts come from our reconditioned stock, which means they’re previously used lifts that have been fully refurbished and tested before installation. You’re getting a safe, reliable stairlift that does exactly what it needs to do.

For curved staircases, the stairlift itself is reconditioned, fully refurbished and tested before it comes to you, with a made to measure rail included as part of the installation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Stairlift Rental

How quickly can a rental stairlift be installed?

For a straight stairlift, we can often install within a few days of first contact, subject to availability. Curved stairlifts take a little longer because the rail has to be made to measure for your home, but we’ll give you a clear timeframe when you get in touch.

Is there a minimum rental period?

There’s no fixed minimum term. You can have the stairlift for as long or as short a time as you need.

What happens when I no longer need the stairlift?

You give us a call and we come and remove it. The removal is included in your installation fee, so there’s nothing extra to pay.

Does the monthly rental cover repairs?

Yes. Your monthly rental includes servicing and maintenance. If the stairlift develops a fault through normal use, we’ll come out and fix it at no extra cost. Standard warranty conditions apply, covering manufacturing defects.

Can I switch from renting to buying?

That’s something we can discuss. If you start renting and decide you’d rather own the stairlift outright, get in touch and we’ll talk through your options.

Are rental stairlifts safe?

Yes. All of our rental stairlifts are fully reconditioned and tested before installation. They meet the same safety standards as any stairlift we install. Your safety is the only thing that matters, and we wouldn’t put a stairlift in your home that we weren’t completely confident in.
