If you or someone you care for is facing surgery and you’re worried about managing the stairs during recovery, a temporary stairlift rental is worth considering. It’s one of the most practical solutions available, and more people use it than you might think.
This guide explains how rental works for post-surgery recovery, what to think about before the operation rather than after, and how to make sure you’re not left in a difficult situation on discharge day.
Why Surgery Can Make the Stairs a Problem
After a major operation, getting up and down stairs can go from something you barely think about to something genuinely difficult or even dangerous. Weakened strength, reduced mobility, pain, balance issues, and medication all play a role in the weeks and months after surgery for recuperation.
For many people, the stairs become the single biggest obstacle to recovering comfortably at home. And if the bedroom and bathroom are upstairs, it’s not something you can easily work around.
A temporary stairlift solves that problem. It goes in before or after the operation, gives you safe and independent access to your whole home while you recover, and comes out when you no longer need it.
What Types of Surgery Are People Renting For?

The most common situations we see are:
Hip replacement. One of the most frequently performed orthopaedic operations in the UK. Recovery typically takes several months, during which putting weight through the hip and managing stairs can be difficult and sometimes restricted.
Knee replacement. Similar to hip surgery in terms of the recovery demands. Stairs require bending the knee and putting pressure through the knee, which can be painful and difficult in the weeks following the operation.
Broken leg or fracture. A temporary condition that makes stairs difficult or impossible while the bone heals. Recovery times vary but a stairlift rental for the duration is a straightforward solution.
Other surgery or hospital stays. Any operation or period of illness that leaves someone weaker or less steady on their feet than usual may make the stairs harder to manage. Recovery looks different for everyone, and a stairlift can make the difference between recovering comfortably at home and struggling unnecessarily.
The Most Important Thing: Plan Ahead if You Can
This is something we’d encourage anyone with a planned operation to think about before they go into hospital rather than after.
Here’s why it matters. If you have a curved staircase and you need a curved stairlift, the rail has to be made to measure for your specific staircase. From the survey to installation, that process typically takes two to five weeks. If you only think about it once you’re in hospital waiting to be discharged, a curved stairlift may not be ready in time.
Straight stairlifts are much faster. In urgent cases we can install a straight stairlift the next day if everything lines up. But even so, leaving it until the last minute adds unnecessary stress at an already difficult time.
If you know a significant operation is coming up and you’re likely to struggle with the stairs afterwards, get in touch with us beforehand. We can carry out a survey, give you a quote, and have everything ready to go so the stairlift is in place before you come home, rather than becoming a panic in the days before discharge.
Hospital Discharge and Stairlifts

Sometimes a stairlift isn’t just helpful after surgery, it’s a condition of being discharged. A hospital won’t send someone home if their home isn’t safe for them to return to, and if the stairs are a concern, a stairlift may be specifically recommended before discharge can happen.
In those situations, speed matters. For a straight stairlift, we can often move very quickly. For a curved stairlift, the lead time for the made-to-measure rail means it’s harder to respond immediately, which is exactly why thinking ahead makes such a difference.
If you’re in this situation right now and you need to move quickly, call us and explain the circumstances. We’ll tell you honestly what’s possible and how fast we can do it.
Can I Rent a Curved Stairlift for Surgery Recovery?
Yes. We offer curved stairlift rentals, which most companies don’t. If your staircase has bends or turns, you don’t have to go without or commit to buying outright.
The key difference is lead time. A curved stairlift rental requires a made-to-measure rail, which takes two to five weeks from survey to installation. A straight stairlift rental can often be installed much faster.
If your surgery is planned and you have a curved staircase, get in touch as early as possible so the rail can be manufactured and ready in time.
How Does a Post-Surgery Stairlift Rental Work?
Step one: call us. Tell us your situation, your staircase type, and your likely timescale. We’ll advise on the fastest realistic option and arrange a survey.
Step two: free home survey. We come out to measure the staircase and assess what’s needed. For straight staircases this is quick and installation can often follow within days. For curved staircases, we’ll do a survey to price the job for you and tell you whats possible. Curved stairlifts require a “photosurvey” which draws the rail up to suit your stairs and we’ll do this when you tell us you’d like to order and complete the photosurvey. Once the photosurvey drawing is approved, this triggers the manufacturing process for the made-to-measure rail.
Step three: installation. The stairlift is fitted and you’re shown how to use it before the engineer leaves. For post-surgery customers, the engineer will make sure everything is set up correctly for the person’s specific needs and mobility for them to be ready at the point of discharge. If anything has changed we can adjust the stairlift to suit your needs.
Step four: use it for as long as you need it. There’s no minimum rental term and no fixed end date. You keep the stairlift for as long as recovery requires. The monthly rental continues until you call us to arrange removal.
Step five: removal. When you’re back on your feet and no longer need the lift, give us a call. We’ll arrange a convenient time to come and take it away. Removal is included in the installation fee, so there’s nothing extra to pay. Removal is of course optional and you can rent the stairlift ongoing for as long as you need it. Often a lot of people find having a stairlift installed is beneficial and is a good help to them beyond post-operation recovery so you can rent for as long as you like.
What Does Post-Surgery Stairlift Rental Cost?
Straight stairlift rental: from £450 installation (includes first month’s rental and removal), then £50 per month.
Curved stairlift rental: from £2,000 installation (includes the made-to-measure rail, first month’s rental and removal), then £100 per month.
The monthly rental includes maintenance. If the lift is still in place at the twelve-month point, the annual service is included too.
Frequently Asked Questions
How quickly can you install a stairlift before a hospital discharge?
For a straight stairlift, we can often install within days of first contact in urgent cases. For a curved stairlift, the made-to-measure rail takes two to five weeks to manufacture. If discharge is imminent and you have curved stairs, call us immediately and we’ll tell you honestly what’s possible.
Is there a minimum rental period?
No. There’s no minimum term. You keep the stairlift for as long as you need it and call us when you’re done.
Can I rent a stairlift if my stairs have a bend or corner?
Yes. We offer curved stairlift rentals, which most companies don’t. See our dedicated article on curved stairlift rental for more details.
What if my recovery takes longer than expected?
The rental simply continues. There’s no fixed end date and no pressure to return the lift by a certain time. When you’re ready, you call us and we arrange the removal.
Do I need a doctor’s referral or any paperwork to rent a stairlift?
No. You don’t need a referral or any medical documentation to arrange a rental. Just call us and explain your situation.
What about VAT? Do I pay full price?
If you have a long-term health condition or disability, you may qualify for zero-rated VAT on your stairlift rental. If you are over 60, a reduced rate of 5% may apply rather than the standard 20%. We’ll check this with you when you get in touch. Check out our article on VAT Relief on Stairlifts and who qualifies here.
