Renting a stairlift is a practical solution for many people with mobility issues for a short period, such as a for a short term illness or it can be more longer term if you prefer to rent rather than buy.
It may be that you need a temporary stairlift for a short time. A rental stairlift can help to overcome problems climbing the stairs on a temporary basis if you have a short term illness, injuries, or hospital discharges where you're not up to full strength and need a little help managing the stairs.
We also often install a temporary stairlift for a short period where a family member comes to stay in your home, whether that be whilst they recuperate from a hospital stay and they need to move in with a relative or if they are coming for a holiday period such as staying with you over Christmas.
Rental stairlifts can also help people who are in those last few weeks and months who have a terminal illness. They can help to make the most of the time they have by spending time with the family downstairs and being able to go outdoors and enjoy the garden too.
We completely understand that this is a very difficult and stressful time for families and like with all our customers we care and will do everything we can to help get a rental stairlift in for you quickly with minimal disruption. When temporary stairlift is no longer needed we'll come out and take it out just as quickly because we know how distressing this time can be.
You might be thinking that you don't tick any of the boxes above so is a stairlift rental for me? What about people that need to hire one longer term?
Of course we can help with a rental for both long and short term periods. Many people often prefer to rent longer term rather than buy for the convenience of knowing if you are on a fixed budget, the monthly maintenance and servicing costs, and all the benefits are included without even owning a lift!
Some people prefer to enter into a rental agreement with stairlift rental companies because it means they can keep their money in the bank rather than having a large outlay of money all at once. Paying monthly to rent a stairlift is then ideal as there's just a simple monthly rental charge to pay.
If you live in your own home and can't afford to buy a new or reconditioned model then renting a stairlift is a good idea as there is a lower cost initially then the monthly fee to pay. A disabled facilities grant may entitle you to have a free new stairlift, but you would need to contact your local authority to check out the wait times and if you would qualify for this means tested grant. If you don't want to wait, disclose your financial information and apply for the grant then a renting a stairlift could be the answer.
A rental model is also a great idea for those people who are not convinced they need a stairlift yet! They might be your mum or a husband or a friend etc. For these people who can't face a stairlift being a "permanent solution" often a temporary hire model is accepted more. With lower cost fees and the option to get it removed included it's often a winner with families in this situation - so the feedback from our customers has told us!
A hire stairlift can be the best solution to regain independence in the home for people with reduced mobility. But of course, you will pay the monthly rental fee for as long as you need it which could add up and could mean that it may make more financial sense to buy rather than rent. It would be for you to weigh up the costs to see whether a rental model is a cost effective alternative to buying one.
Our rental stairlifts come from our reconditioned stock. But don’t worry, our reconditioned stair lifts are still great quality!
When stair lifts are no longer needed, we remove them from our customer’s homes and bring them back to our workshop. Stairlifts are scrapped if they are too old or worn out, then the best ones are saved for reuse as both reconditioned stairlifts and become a part of our rental scheme.
Next, our workshop engineer checks over and reconditions each stair lift thoroughly. This process takes several hours and each stair lift is run on our test rails before they are given our high-quality seal of approval. The stair lift is thoroughly cleaned and sanitised. It is then wrapped, boxed and stored ready to be used in our stairlift rental service.
What makes us different is whilst you'll find some stairlift companies offer models for hire for straight staircases there aren't many who are able to offer a curved stairlift rental like ourselves. So it doesn't matter what shape your stairs- are we can help! Curved stairlift rental models do require a made-to-measure rail so it is tailored to your stairs and it will be more expensive than straight stairlifts.
The key things about renting a stairlift from 1st Choice Stairlifts:
There is an initial cost which covers the installation cost, the first months stairlift rental costs, and stair lift removal when no longer required.
You pay a monthly cost thereafter for as long as you would like the stairlift hire with no hidden costs.
No set length contract and no fixed term commitments.
All maintenance, parts, and repairs (subject to our standard warranty conditions) are included in your monthly rental fee, including an annual service and breakdown cover.
When the stairlift is no longer needed, we will remove it and the stairlift rental agreement will terminate. We always own the stairlift under the rental terms.
You can buy your stairlift rather than continuing to rent a stairlift at a later date, you can ask for a price at any time.
When you place an order for a straight stairlift rental with us, our workshop engineer will cut a rail to fit the dimensions of your staircase. Our straight stairlift rental options are in stock and ready-to-go for a quick straight stairlift installation.
With a curved stairlift rental, while the chair and the carriage are reconditioned, each curved stairlift rail is made-to-measure by the manufacturers to fit the bends of your stairs, even with a stairlift rental. Therefore means that the initial installation charge will be more than that of a straight staircase for your stairlift hire.
## Why are curved rental stairlifts more expensive?
Curved stairs are a bit more tricky, as the rail is tailored to the curves and bends of your stairs. Which is why there is an extra cost to rent a stairlift on the stairlift installation fee as the rails are significantly more expensive than one of our straight stairlifts.
There’s more advanced engineering in the workings of our curved rental stairlifts which adds an extra expense. Curved stairlift models can also vary in price due to the number of bends on your stairs, unlike straight stairlifts. It often costs an extra few hundred pounds per bend on a curved stairlift.
Stairlift costs also depend on how far the rail has to travel; if you wanted the lift to go up multiple flights, for example in a townhouse, extra rail would need to be made for the stairlift. If you have spiral stairs, non-standard bends will need to be made for your stairs as a bespoke stairlift solution.
First of all, give us a call on 0800 019 22 10 and speak to our sales team who will advise you about our rental scheme. We will also schedule a surveyor to come and visit you in your own home.
During your survey visit, you and your stairs will be measured so that we can recommend the best stairlift to suit your needs and fit your home so you can rent a stairlift through an informed decision to see if it is a sensible option for you to rent.
If you like, you can visit our showroom in Calne, Wiltshire, so that you can try out our range of straight and curved stairlifts for yourself.
You can even see the exact refurbished rental stairlift you are interested in to see what great condition it’s in!

With your monthly rental all maintenance is covered including parts (for manufacturing defects). If you ever have a problem then all you need to do is pick up the phone and we will be there for you.
Our engineers are on call for emergency repairs 24/7, 365 days a year and will normally get to an urgent breakdown the same day. When choosing a stairlift company to install a rental stairlift please do factor in the aftercare service and make sure the company you are choosing is local and can reach you quickly should you ever have a problem.
Your stairlift would need to be serviced annually and this is covered within the rental if you have a stairlift installed over the annual anniversary term. An annual service is a 24-point checklist where we'll check over the lift thoroughly for you, make sure all the bolts are tightened, the safety features work and the batteries are checked to make sure the model is running at its optimal speed. We'll also clean it too!
Having this rental stairlift agreement in place means that you don't have to pay for an extended warranty or servicing as it is all included and free within the terms of the rental agreement so you can save money and protects you from unexpected costs when you have a fixed budget.
The only other extra cost you'd have to factor in when renting a stairlift is the cost of electricity. Although all rental stairlifts are battery operated they charge up with a low voltage trickle charge from the mains electricity so you can only expect to pay £10-20 in electricity annually.
