A 30-year career in stairlifts reveals why people delay decisions, and what needs to change to help them act earlier.

April 1st might be known for pranks and practical jokes, but for our Director and Owner, Coral, this year it marks a 30-year career in an industry that has quietly transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.

Having started in the stairlift industry on 1^st April 1996, working for 2 stairlift manufacturers, and later co-founding 1st Choice Stairlifts in 2004, her journey has spanned three decades of change in technology, customer expectations, and the way people approach mobility in the home.

But despite all that change, one thing has remained consistent.  Coral said, “After 30 years, the biggest mistake I see isn’t people leaving it too late. It’s that they don’t recognise themselves as someone who needs help until it becomes unavoidable.”

A decision people delay

For many people, the idea of a stairlift is not something they actively consider until they feel they have no choice.

In reality, the early signs of needing a lift often appear much sooner, whether that be holding onto the handrail more tightly, taking the stairs more slowly or even avoiding trips upstairs altogether.

“These are things that people just adapt to over time,” explains Coral. “They don’t necessarily see it as a problem at first. They just get on with it.”

The problem is that when this situation comes to a head, it’s often very sudden.

“We often receive calls crying for help after something has happened. A fall, a near miss, or a hospital discharge. At that point, what could have been a calm decision often becomes urgent and time-pressured.”

Families are required to make quick decisions, often in stressful circumstances, and in many cases, the same reflection follows.

“We hear it all the time from customers and their families: ‘We wish we’d done this sooner.’”

More than just a stairlift

With over 22 years in business and thousands of customers supported, 1st Choice Stairlifts has built its reputation around understanding not just the product, but the people using it.

“We’ve been doing this long enough to know that it’s not necessarily just about the product,” she explained. “It’s about understanding what people are going through when they’re making these decisions and helping people to get the best solution possible.”

That includes recognising the emotional and psychological barriers that often sit behind the delay.

“A lot of people don’t see themselves as someone who needs a stairlift. It can feel like a big step. But what we see time and time again is that once it’s been installed in a customer’s home, it actually gives people more freedom, not less. It truly does make life so much easier.”

As demand for home adaptations continues to grow, there is a clear opportunity for the industry as a whole to demonstrate the benefits to shift its approach to helping people forward plan in a proactive, not reactive way.

“It’s not about encouraging people to act before they’re ready,” Coral added. “It’s about helping them understand their options earlier, so they can make informed decisions in their own time.”
