MONARCH INVENTS STAIRLIFT

6th March 2009
MONARCH INVENTS STAIRLIFT

According to a recent article in the Daily Mail, apparently Henry VIII was the inventor of Stairlifts!

Historian Dr David Starkey has found that Henry VIII used a bespoke “Stairthrone”, described in royal records as “a chair …. that goeth up and down” and was thought to be in Whitehall Palace in London where it would have lifted the King up and down a 20ft staircase.

No picture exists of the “Stairthrone” but it is thought to have been a block and tackle system similar to those used on the Kings warship “The Mary Rose”, which would have been used with servants pulling on the ropes to lift the 30 stone monarch up and down stairs.

Until recently the first stairlift was thought to have been made in 1930 in Pennsylvania by CC Crispen, a self-taught engineer.

Stairlifts started to be manufactured in the UK in the early 1970s, around the time that 1st Choice Stairlifts Director Coral Affleck was born!

Coral says “What an amazing find - who would have thought that the stairlift would have dated back as far as the 1500s!  Thankfully nowadays we have more stylish and slimline models available and you don’t need any servants either as they come fully powered!”

These days, a stairlift can be fitted in a matter of a few hours and with 1st Choice Stairlifts wide range of Stairlifts from every UK manufacturer (except Henry’s model), you have more choice at 1st Choice Stairlifts and you’re in safe hands.
